Padipakam

Building a Culture of Reading

Sirakukal's long-term community reading and library development initiative, creating living learning spaces where children discover the joy of reading.

Our Vision for Reading

Padipakam is Sirakukal's long-term community reading and library development initiative, created with the belief that reading is the foundation of learning, imagination, and social empowerment. The initiative responds to a critical gap in many rural and underserved communities where children grow up with limited access to books beyond school textbooks.

Rather than viewing libraries as buildings alone, Padipakam treats them as living learning spaces places where children gather, read together, ask questions, and develop confidence through knowledge.

Why Padipakam Matters

In many villages, schools and communities lack:

📚

Age-appropriate Reading Materials

Limited access to diverse books

🏛️

Safe Library Spaces

Inaccessible learning environments

🌟

Reading Encouragement

Limited support beyond classrooms

This limits children's exposure to language, creativity, and independent thinking. Padipakam was initiated to address this root problem by placing books directly into the hands of children and communities.

What We Do

1

Village & Community Library Creation

Padipakam establishes small but functional libraries in villages and schools, tailored to local needs. These libraries are developed in collaboration with community members, teachers, and youth volunteers to ensure long-term ownership and sustainability.

To date, 17 village libraries have been created under the Padipakam initiative.

2

Book Collection & Distribution

Padipakam conducts continuous book collection drives to support school and community libraries. Books are carefully selected to include:

  • Children's storybooks
  • Educational & reference books
  • Language learning materials
  • General knowledge books

100+ book donation initiatives carried out, with support from donors across the region including Tamil Nadu, India.
